أسس المجلس الدولي للمتاحف، اليوم العالمي للمتاحف في 1977م، فأصبح يوم 18 مايو من كل عام يوماً يحتفل فيه العالم بأهمية المتاحف ودورها التوعوي والتعليمي والثقافي، ويهدف الاحتفال باليوم العالمي للمتاحف لتعزيز العلاقة بين المتحف والمجتمع باعتبار أن المتحف في العلم الحديث لم يعد فقط مجرد بيت لحفظ الكنوز التاريخية والتراثية والثقافية، بل أصبح مركزاً علمياً مهماً يسهم في نشر المعرفة والعلوم والتعريف بالتراث الإنساني في جميع المجالات، وتكمن أهمية المتحف بالتعريف بثقافات الأمم والشعوب وذلك من خلال عرض المقتنيات المتحفية التي تسهم في تثقيف أعداد كبيرة من الزوار، ويبلغ عدد المتاحف في المملكة أكثر من 300 متحفًا حكومياً وخاصاً.
وتعد «مؤسسة عبدالله بن محمد أبابطين الثقافية» بروضة سدير (١٦٠كم شمال الرياض)، أحد أهم الوجهات للكثير من الزوار والباحثين من داخل وخارج المملكة، ومعلم تراثي في سدير يغذّي وجدان المنطقة ويؤصل تاريخها وحضارتها وثقافتها، ويستقبل الزوار وطلبة المدارس على مدار العام، حيث يضم: مكتبة سدير الوثائقية، التي تحتوي على 100 ألف كتاب مخصصة لجمع وتوثيق تاريخ مدن سدير، فضلاً عن إصدارات تاريخية عن المملكة، كما يستهدف إثراء المعرفة وتسهيل الحصول على المعلومات لمن أراد أن يكتب أو يبحث في تاريخ المملكة، ومتحف عبدالله بن محمد أبابطين التراثي الذي يضم 5 آلاف قطعة تراثية، ويعتبر من أهم المتاحف الخاصة في المملكة، ويمكن للزائر أن يطلع عن كثب على المخطوطات وخرائط الجزيرة العربية والأسلحة التراثية والعملات القديمة ومعرض الصحف والمجلات السعودية النادرة، ومعرض الوثائق والمخطوطات، بالإضافة إلى معرض النخلة ومنتجاتها، وبيت الفلاّح، ومعرض التعليم قديماً، ومعرض مجسمات الأماكن التاريخية في إقليم سدير، والتراث الشعبي، بالإضافة للكثير من الأماكن التراثية والمناظر الطبيعية بمزرعة العائذية في روضة سدير، وذلك تحقيقًا لرسالة المتحف في نشر الثقافة المتحفية وإثراء المعرفة.
